UNCLE GABE ISN’T THE one who got me thinking about Mom. He got me talking about Mom. There’s a difference.

There wasn’t that much point in talking about Mom before Uncle Gabe came here.

Nana doesn’t like to talk about Mom, and Mr. Burns can’t talk about her because he never knew her. He can only listen to me talk about her.

No one else where we live now knew my mom either.

Maybe that’s the real reason Nana moved out here from Livingston.

Try googling “Mia Petroski.” Go ahead, give it a try.

In case you’re interested, the last name Petroski is the 106,088th most common last name in the world. Yao is the 91st. Bernal is 1,138th.

My point is that it’s not like there are a lot of people named “Mia Petroski” out there.

The last time I looked, there was a college student in Columbia, Missouri; a realtor in Orlando, Florida; and a gastroenterologist in Pierre, South Dakota. None of them are Mom. They all have pictures on their profiles, so I know. Another Mia Petroski died last year, but she was ninety-five years old. Not Mom either.

I might not talk about Mom all that much.

But I think about Mom a lot more than I talk. Especially now that Uncle Gabe’s face reminds me of her every day.

Maybe I always did think about her more than I wanted to admit. Even to myself. Especially to myself.
